DIY: Pajama Pants

My bestie and I may be too old for "Best Friends Forever" jewelry, we're not too old for matching PJ pants. Pajama pants are probably one of the easiest pieces of clothing to DIY without a pattern - all you need is an existing pair of pajama pants (or regular pants) and some comfortable fabric.

Materials:

  • 2 yards of fabric
  • 1 yard of 1" (non-folding) elastic
  • pair of (pajama) pants
  • fabric scissors
  • sewing machine
  • sewing kit

Let's Get Started!

Picture
1. Folding the fabric in half (right side out), trace one leg of the pajama pants onto the fabric, with the straight side along the fold. Leave a 1" border all around the cut edges and a 2" border at the waist in the front (3" border in the back), ensuring that the waist area and bottom of pant leg are straight.
Picture
3. Repeat steps 1-2 with the other pant leg. Turning one leg inside out and placing inside the other, stitch the sides of the waist area together. Again, adjust as needed and reinforce with a zigzag stitch.
Picture
5. Folding 1.5" over on the waist, stitch around, leaving a 3" gap. Using a safety pin, feed the elastic through and stitch the elastic ends together. Close the gap and reinforce the stitches.
Picture
2. Stitch the pant legs together with a short stitch, leaving a 0.5" seam. Adjust the width at area as needed. Once the leg shape is as desired, cut the seam off close to the stitch, and reinforce with a zigzag stitch.

4. Hem both pant legs to the correct length and reinforce with a zigzag stitch.

6. Adjust and reinforce any seams if necessary. I added a cute bow of the fabric scraps to the front of the waistband.

And You're Done!

DIY: Hostess Apron

I was wandering around Hobby Lobby (much more frequently than I should) when I found the cutest fabric - perfect for things around the kitchen. On a whim, I decided that I needed a new, DIY apron. I did buy quite a bit of the fabric, so I'm thinking of also making a oven mitts and some pot holders out of it.

Materials:

Let's Get Started!

Picture
1. Print, cut and tape together the template (top and bottom) from Style Me Pretty.

Picture
3. With correct sides facing each other, lay the corresponding parts from each fabric. Stitch together.

Picture
5. Cut two 3" x 16.5" strips from the contrasting fabric. On each longer edge, iron a 0.5" hem. On each short edge, iron a 0..25" hem.

Picture
7. For each folded strip, stitch the edges together, leaving a 0.25" seam. At one end of each strip, stitch together, also leaving a 0.25" seam.

Picture
9. Cut a 8.5" x 20" piece from the main fabric. On one of the longer edges, fold and iron a 0.5" hem. On the shorter edges, fold and iron a 0.5" hem on both sides.

Picture
11. Pin the hemmed piece onto the skirt, with the 0.25" hem on the top. Stitch the other 3 edges onto the skirt. To divide the pockets, stitch vertically at intervals down the length of the pocket.

Picture
13. Under the bottom of the strip on the front, pin the sides and center of the skirt in place. Pin ruffles at intervals.

Picture
15. On each side of the waist strips, place the unhemmed edge of the 1" x 36" strip, leaving about 1" inside. Stitch along the edge, going back and forth a few times along the waist tie.

Picture
2. Cut out the templates from both fabrics.

Picture
4. Turn fabric right side out.

Picture
6. Cut two 2" x 36" strips and two 1.5" x 28" strips from the contrasting fabric. Fold each strip lengthwise and iron flat.

Picture
8. Using a straw, turn the strips right side out.

Picture
10. On the remaining longer edge, fold, iron, and stitch a 0.25" hem.

Picture
12. Place the hemmed 2.5" x 16" strips along the base of the top (one on the front, one on the back), overlapping about 0.25". Stitch the strips and top together.

Picture
14. With the strips covering both sides again, stitch the strips and skirt together.

Picture
16. Fold 1" back on each unhemmed edge of the 0.5" x 28" strip. Place onto the edge of the top corner of the apron top. Stitch along the end of the fold, and again along the edge of the top.

And You're Done!
